How do red mode and themes work?
Appearance settings
In Settings, choose how DreamGate looks:
- System: follows your phone's light or dark setting.
- Sun-based: light from sunrise to sunset, dark the rest of the time.
- Red: red on black, all the time.
Whatever you choose, tapping Going to sleep switches the app to red night mode for the night.
What red mode is
In red mode every colour on screen is pure red on true black, with no green or blue at all. Hierarchy comes from size and weight rather than dimmer reds, so text stays at about 5.25:1 contrast. On OLED screens only the red sub-pixels light up. LCD screens still use a backlight, so some broad-spectrum light remains.
Red mode keeps the screen dim and calm at night. We don't claim it protects your sleep hormones or improves your sleep.
If red text is hard for you to read, use the dark theme instead: red mode can't reach the higher contrast the other themes have.
The sun-based theme and your location
- The app asks for your approximate location once, only if you choose the sun-based theme.
- It rounds it to about 10 km before saving it, and uses it only to work out sunrise and sunset on your phone.
- If you say no, or where the sun doesn't rise or set, it uses 07:00 to 19:00 instead.
- The rounded location stays on this phone, and is never included in backups.
Night mode on this website
dreamgate.one has its own night mode button. Your choice is saved in your browser's local storage, isn't sent anywhere, and you can clear it in your browser settings.
