How do backups work?

Short answerSettings, then Your data, then Export encrypted backup makes a file encrypted with a passphrase you choose. Keep the passphrase safe: without it, nobody can open the file, including us.

Why back up

Your entries live only on your phone. We never receive a copy, so we can't restore anything you delete or lose with a lost, reset or broken phone. A backup is the only way to keep a copy.

Make a backup

  1. Open Settings → Your data → Export encrypted backup.
  2. Choose a passphrase of at least 12 characters, and enter it twice.
  3. Save the file wherever you like: Files, a cloud drive, or a message to yourself.

Every backup is encrypted with your passphrase. The app never creates an unencrypted backup. The file includes everything in the app except your saved location, which stays on the phone.

Your passphrase

Important

Your passphrase is the only way into a backup. We never see or store it, and there's no reset. If you forget it, nobody, including us, can open that backup. Keep it in a password manager.

Restore a backup

  1. Open Settings → Your data → Restore from backup, and pick the backup file.
  2. Enter its passphrase.
  3. Confirm Replace. Restoring replaces everything currently on this phone with the backup's contents.

The app checks the whole backup before changing anything. If the passphrase is wrong or the file is damaged, nothing on your phone changes. Backups made before encryption was required can still be restored.

Where to keep backups

If you save a backup to another service, such as a cloud drive or email, that service holds the file under its own terms. The file stays encrypted, so without your passphrase it can't be read by that service or by us.
