How do I move to a new phone?
Short answerExport an encrypted backup on your old phone and restore it on the new one. Phone backups and transfers won't move your journal.
The short answer
Export an encrypted backup on your old phone, install DreamGate on the new one, and restore the backup there. Backups and restoring has the steps.
Why a phone transfer isn't enough
- Android: DreamGate opts out of Android's automatic backup and device-to-device transfer, so its data isn't copied to Google Drive or to a new phone.
- iPhone: an iCloud or computer backup may include DreamGate's database file, but it stays encrypted. Its key is stored with "this device only" protection, so a restored copy can't be unlocked on a different phone.
That's deliberate: your journal's key stays on the phone it was made on: it isn't included in phone backups or moved to a new phone.
After you move
- Your saved location isn't included in backups. If you use the sun-based theme, allow location again on the new phone, or the app uses 07:00–19:00.
- Check your safety answers and settings in Settings.
- When you're happy everything arrived, you can delete the app's data on the old phone with Settings → Your data → Delete all data.
