1Not a medical device#

1.1 DreamGate is a general wellness and self-exploration tool for everyday wellbeing. It is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent any disease or condition, including insomnia, sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, sleep paralysis, nightmare disorder, PTSD, depression, anxiety, epilepsy or any other physical or mental health condition.

1.2 DreamGate has not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or any other medical regulator [TO CONFIRM: the user or control to confirm the general wellness positioning for each market served; lawyer review recommended (D-162, D-181)].

1.3 Nothing in the app or on the website is medical, psychological or professional advice. Information about sleep and dreaming is general and educational.

Important

Not for emergencies. If you're in danger, thinking about harming yourself, or in crisis, call your local emergency number now (911 in the US, 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK). In the US you can also call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

2Rest comes first#

2.1 Lucid dreaming practice should sit on top of good sleep, never replace it. Practices like Wake Back to Bed interrupt your sleep on purpose. Save them for nights when you can sleep in, and skip them when you're short on sleep, unwell, or need to be alert the next day, for example to drive.

2.2 Night practice is always your choice, and the app warns you every time. Its rest check adds time to a hold before night practice when your logged nights suggest you need rest, and when it can't read your data, night practice is off until it can. It is a simple set of rules, not a medical assessment, and it can't know everything about you. Methodology and Sources explains how it works.

3Possible effects#

Most people can try dream journalling and lucid dreaming practices without problems. Some people notice:

  • shorter or more broken sleep, and feeling more tired the next day;
  • vivid dreams, false awakenings (dreaming that you've woken up), or episodes of sleep paralysis, which can be frightening;
  • for some people, a temporary blurring of what was dreamed and what was real, or feeling detached.

Stop using the night features if you notice any of these, if your sleep gets worse, or if the practice leaves you anxious. If it continues, talk to a healthcare professional.

4Who should not use the night features#

Don't use the night features (such as Wake Back to Bed practice) without first talking to a doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you have epilepsy, have ever had a seizure, or have been told to avoid flashing or flickering light;
  • you often experience sleep paralysis, or frightening experiences as you fall asleep or wake up;
  • you have times when you feel disconnected from yourself or your surroundings, or lose track of time without knowing why;
  • you have a diagnosed sleep disorder, such as insomnia, sleep apnoea or narcolepsy;
  • you have a mental health condition that can be affected by sleep loss, such as bipolar disorder, psychosis or PTSD;
  • you're pregnant, or you take medication that affects your sleep or alertness;
  • your work or responsibilities need you to be fully alert after waking (for example, night shifts, driving or caring for others).

The app asks the first three of these as its safety questions. Any answer other than "no", including "not sure", turns night practice off. It doesn't ask about the other four, so it holds no diagnosis of a sleep disorder or mental health condition, and nothing about pregnancy, medication or your work. Please check them yourself before using the night features.

5Sound and light#

5.1 Sound. DreamGate plays no sounds at night.

5.2 Sounds make no medical claims. We don't claim that any sound in DreamGate changes your brainwaves, induces a particular state, improves your sleep or causes a lucid dream.

5.3 No pulsing light. The app has no night glow or other pulsing light.

5.4 Red night mode shows the app in red on black to keep screen light dim at night. We don't claim it protects your sleep hormones or improves your sleep.

6No promised results#

Everyone's sleep and dreams are different. DreamGate can't promise lucid dreams, better dream recall, better sleep or any other result. Dream themes the app notices are counted, not interpreted: DreamGate never tells you what a dream means.

7What you say stays on your phone#

The app never sends what you say to us. It leaves your phone only if you choose to share it, such as a to-do, a calendar entry or a backup. If you're ever in danger, call your local emergency number.

8Talk to a professional#

If you're concerned about your sleep, your dreams or your mental health, talk to a doctor or another qualified healthcare professional. Don't delay or ignore professional advice because of anything in DreamGate.
